The next day, the weather was muggy. Rain wanted to fall, but instead only sputtered through a few false starts. Darkness seemed to creep from the overcast sky into the Sanders’ home.

“You boys will be okay with dinner?” Rebecca asked as she sorted through her book bag.

“Yes.” John placed his hands on her shoulders and massaged the base of her neck. “Randy will be here soon, and he’ll have pizza for the game.” His fingers pressed down until her body softened. “Relax, okay?”

She stopped shuffling through the bag and dropped her hands to her side as John hit a tight muscle. “Don’t forget about Robbie,” she mumbled, “while you’re watching.”

“How can we? It was his idea to watch the game.”

Rebecca pulled away to offer John a bemused look.

A long series of honks erupted outside. John opened the door to see Randy unloading two large pizza boxes.

“Hey there, Becky Boop,” Randy called as he entered the house.

Rebecca glared at him. “Randy, you know I absolutely hate it when you call me that.”

“That’s exactly why I do it.” He grinned.

John took the pizza boxes. “Think you got enough food?”

“As long as you got the drinks.”

Rebecca closed her bag. “Can I steal a piece?”

“Please do.” Randy motioned at the boxes.

“Thank you.” She stepped toward the pizza.

“Any person who refers to me among their friends as ‘the beloved biology teacher’ certainly deserves a slice.”

“Oh?” She paused.

“For that matter, a whole pizza, if you’d like.”

“So . . .” Rebecca smiled. “You and Elle talked?”

“More than just talked.” He winked at her.

“I knew it!” Rebecca clapped her hands together. “And I’m very glad.”

“Thank you.” Randy opened the pizza box.

She grinned with pride. “You’re welcome.” Then she looked inside. “Oh. What kind is this?”

“Meat, meat, and more meat.”

She grabbed a piece. “Guess I probably didn’t need to ask.”

“Other than the cow’s tongue, the whole beast should be there. Plus his friend.” Randy imitated a pig snort.

John approached the pizza. “You’re dissecting in class again, aren’t you?”

“Yep.” Randy raised his eyebrows to imitate a psychotic look. “The power of the knife.”

“Leave now,” John said as he handed Rebecca her bag. “Otherwise Randy will reveal details that will ruin your meal.”

“Thanks.” She smiled at both of them. “You boys have fun tonight.” She kissed John, and then went into the den to hug Robert.

Five minutes later, pizza, snacks, and drinks were within easy reach. Robert’s high chair had been moved to the den, and discarded pizza pieces were already scattered on the tablecloth laid out below.

“Does he always make a mess?” Randy asked as the boy wiped more sauce against his check.

“When I give him a piece like that . . . without cutting it up . . . yeah. Especially since he just wants the toppings.”

“Wow. Do you realize that within a few months, you could be driving a minivan?”

“Huh?”

“One day Rebecca could show up with a minivan, and then you’d be stuck.”

“What?”

“Then you’d have enough seatbelts, so there’d be no excuse to stop the Sanders family from exploding.
